It is believed that in the early days of poker or gambling, poker chip sets were not used and instead small and different items were used to play with. They were pieces of wood or clay and sometimes, even gold were also used as poker tokens. Firstly clay chips gained popularity and was widely used in casinos and game rooms.

It was only gradually and after the use of clay chips that poker chip set came into existence and was used popularly. After some time clay composite chips replaced them because they were very easily breakable and that hindered the game and its consistency, which further hampered the enjoyment and fun.

Today the poker chip set has covered quite a considerable distance and the journey till now has given three types of chips, clay, composite and plastic. It depends upon your requirement and number of players in the game, that you make the right choice for your home tournament or for casinos. Most of them are lightweight and easy to handle with, although professional players choose the chips on their weight also.
