Poker chips, like the game of poker itself, have come a long way since it’s invention. Before chips were introduced to the game, poker players would use other small valuable objects, such as gold, to put into the pot. Once the game became more widely played, casinos started issuing clay chips for players to play with in exchange for their small valuables. Through the issuance of chips, the value of bets became more standardized during games while decreasing the likelihood of people stealing gold or valuables from the pot.

The chips issued back then by casinos were made of wood, or other hard materials, but soon chips made of clay started being manufactured in America in the late 1800’s. By the early 1900’s, poker chips had gained their foothold among poker players, and the chips themselves received an upgrade through slits that made the chips easier to stack. Plastic poker chips then began to take hold, with affordable plastic chips being made available to the public in the 1940’s. Nowadays, we have the capabilities to mass produce poker chips made from various materials. Poker chips are now commonplace and make the betting aspect of poker more efficient while also providing players the thrill of throwing chips into the pot.
