Poker is a game of skill, psychology and perhaps above all else, incredible luck. Even the most well played hands will fall victim to an inferior player who happened to catch the lucky cards they needed. Poker players who are better than average tend to run into this frequently at the poker tables; no matter how well they play certain hands and read their opponents, there is nothing to stop their opponent from catching that one card which landed them the winning hand, be it a straight or a powerful full house.
Some poker players push to get any advantage they can get in order to beat the luck of the cards. Some players will place a poker chip on top of their cards to keep them hidden from competitors, however there is nothing from stopping a player either taking a sneak peek at the cards, or working with another player at the table to drive up betting.
For those players who have been burned many times by bad luck they might be more likely to take any advantage at the poker tables they can get. There are many methods to cheating at poker and some of them can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheating_in_poker. There can be a heavy punishment if caught cheating, but those who cheat are unlikely to be stopped if not caught.
